Elizabeth Tinsley awarded Fellowship by The Japan Society (JSPS)

Elizabeth Tinsley has been awarded a six-month fellowship October 2017-March 2018 http://religion.columbia.edu/news/elizabeth-tinsley-awarded-fellowship-japan-society-jsps by The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science to study three works in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art related to premodern Japanese Buddhist astrology/astronomy. She will be working on an analysis of a medieval Star Mandala, and producing translations of an iconographical handscroll and an initiation manual. This set of materials represents a visual and ritual Buddhist culture of interaction with astral bodies that extends far from Japan, sharing and developing concepts and motifs across Asia and beyond.  Tinsley is an advanced doctoral candidate in East Asian Religions, with a specialization in Japanese religions and visual cultures.
