Biography

Avi Ackermann is a doctoral student interested in the intellectual history of Alevism and the emergence of humanistic views of religion in the early modern Middle East. Before coming to Columbia, he worked as a writer and translator, with work appearing in The New York Review of Books, The Baffler, and other publications. He was a 2025 Translation Fellow at the Yiddish Book Center, and a 2023 Dean's Distinguished Graduate from the University of Texas at Austin.
